African-American Republican senator James "Jamie" Carver is preparing for a speech to the NRA when a school shooting occurs near his family home — involving his niece Roberta.

 

With his Chief of Staff Benjamin Tomlinson working to protect his political image, Jamie must also comfort his wife Dorothy and reckon with his daughter Corrina returning home from college.

 

Ultimately, he discovers that the laws he voted for — and passed — are the very ones tearing his own family apart
