Alexis Sims
Artistic Consultant & Submission Review Committee Chair (OTF '23)
Associate Artistic Director (2020-2022)
Alexis Sims is a black, creative storyteller from Birmingham, Alabama, and alumni of the University of Michigan’s prestigious Musical Theatre program. She is passionate about creating safe spaces geared towards engaging the minds and hearts of our community and is thrilled to join the Obsidian Theatre Festival team as its Associate Artistic Director.
Her work on pieces that bring the stories, humanity, nuances, and fullness of BIPOC experiences to life continues to be inspired by material featuring strong female characters; and she is firmly committed to participating in an inclusive redefinition of American culture rooted in the conscious consideration of intersectionality’s effects on our various worldviews and perspectives.
Alexis’ short play Coin Toss was featured as a finalist in Abingdon Theatre Company’s 2020 Virtual Festival of Fall Plays, and Insert Witty Brilliant Title Here was performed as a part of the 2019 Writer’s Block 48 Hour Play Marathon at Matthew Corozine Studios. This Is For Us, her full length play with music, is set to perform as a monthly virtual residency this winter.
Over the past 10 years, Alexis has been blessed to originate roles like Tzipporah in The Prince of Egypt with Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Godspell), Maya in Atlantis with Broadway director Kristin Hangi (Rock of Ages, Clueless), and the Girl in Girl Shakes Loose at Penumbra Theatre.
